4.7/5Overall Score

The 2023 Supra has enough thrills, style, and drama to compensate for the brand's more reserved sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs. The Supra, which was developed and constructed alongside the BMW Z4 convertible, had a similar build quality and simpler—but still attractive—interior elements. The base 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty powerful, but we can't get enough of the optional 382-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter BMW inline-six that propels this two-seater forward. The Supra is only available in rear-wheel drive, and its sure-footed chassis and quick handling let it to come alive on twisting roads and race tracks.

New for 2023

2023 Toyota Supra, Toyota has introduced a six-speed manual transmission to the Supra’s lineup for the 2023 model year, presumably in response to car-boy outcries about the Supra’s absence of a manual transmission. The manual will be available as an option with the more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter BMW-sourced inline-six and will be standard on the A91-MT special edition. In the United States, the A91-MT will be limited to 500 units and will be available in matte white or matte gray paint with a brown-and-black two-tone interior. Other upgrades to the Supra lineup for 2023 include updated suspension and steering tuning, as well as the introduction of Hairpin+, a new driving mode.

Engine, Transmission, Performance

Prior to 2023, all Supra models were equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive; this year, a six-speed manual is finally available, although only with the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. Our long-term 2020 Supra 3.0 (with the eight-speed automatic) put down some very outstanding acceleration numbers on the test track, reaching 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 100 mph in 9.5 ticks. That puts it up against the Chevy Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman GTS, and BMW M2 Competition in the major leagues. It’s even faster than the legendary fourth-generation Supra, which had a 320 horsepower consecutively turbocharged inline-six engine.

The Supra’s suspension is gentle enough to drive on a daily basis, despite its performance potential. It has precise, finely weighted, and direct steering, which adds to its fun-to-drive demeanor. At our test track, the lower-priced four-cylinder variant ran a quick 4.7-second 60-mph run. That’s faster than the Supra’s German cousin, the BMW Z4, which hit 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. The one flaw we discovered with the performance of our long-term Supra was how easily it became stuck in the snow.

The Supra with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the most fuel-efficient, with EPA ratings of 25 mpg city and 32 highway. The Supra 3.0’s fuel economy is still rather impressive, with 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. That outperforms the Camaro, Porsche Cayman GTS, and BMW M2. The six-cylinder Supra earned 34 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, while the turbo four-cylinder Supra delivered a fantastic 38 mpg. Visit the EPA’s website for more information on the Supra’s fuel economy.

The driver-centric cockpit is cramped, and while the double-bubble canopy adds some headroom, the tallest drivers will feel pressed. The cargo area (which is reached via a hatchback) is spacious enough for a couple of carry-on luggage or roughly a week’s worth of supplies for two people. We were able to fit four carry-on luggage between the back seats during our testing. The Toyota’s interior is very similar to the Z4, so people who are used to BMW switchgear and infotainment controls will feel right at home.

The Supra comes equipped with a number of driver-assistance features, including automated emergency braking. The optional Driver’s Assist package adds features like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring to the vehicle. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for further information on the Supra’s crash-test performance. The following are important safety features:

Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian recognition is standard.

Typical lane departure alert

Automatic high-beams are standard.
