Rolls Royce Phantom

The most expensive and luxurious luxury car in the world was replaced by a new Rolls Royce in 2017, and our road testers gave it a dazzling five star road test.

People who own it will love how it shows off their wealth and status and how it makes every trip feel like a special occasion. But even though most people won’t know it, the latest Phantom is also a joy to drive.

Even if Rolls-latest Royce’s run flat tyre technology is used, you can still enjoy the car’s smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride from the back seats. It’s unlike anything else you’ll find in a car. The ride is gently loping and feels indulgent, but it’s also very quiet and smooth.

It’s amazing how easy it is to put such a big car on the road, how it doesn’t mind going at whatever speed is best for your trip, how smooth and flexible its V12 engine is, and how the throttle pedal moves smoothly from step-on to step-off.

Even though this car weighs almost three tons and is a love song to splendid isolation, it will go from 0 to 100 mph and through the gears 30–70 mph faster than the last Ford Focus RS. It is simply amazing how well it was built.

Rolls Royce Ghost

When the Ghost came out in 2009, it was a turning point for Rolls-Royce. It was the start of a change that made the company make thousands of cars a year instead of hundreds.

In its second generation, the Phantom’s rival has made a lot of progress. The Ghost used to use parts from the BMW 7 Series for its mechanical parts, but now it uses the same “Architecture of Luxury” platform as the Cullinan and Phantom. Rolls-Massey Royce’s dampers for the front suspension and an active anti-roll bar for the rear axle, for example, help bring the ride quality closer than ever to that of the Phantom.

The Phantom is a car meant to be driven, but the Ghost was made for a wealthy driver, and its lively personality shows that. It rides a little tighter and is a little more agile than the Phantom, thanks in part to its smaller size. This makes it a better choice for driving every day on busy US roads.

Even so, the car is only one step below its bigger brother in terms of interior space, feeling of luxury, and quality of materials. It uses Rolls-new Royce’s “post-opulence” design style both inside and out. It looks like a neoclassical castle on wheels, but it can be used.

Bentley Flying Spur

Bentley’s four-door “Continental” series limousine came out in 2006 as the Continental Flying Spur. During its most recent redesign in 2014, it lost the “Continental” prefix that connected it to Crewe’s current two-door GT.

But the Flying Spur is now in its third generation, as shown by its prouder, more muscular design, which borrows heavily from the new, attractive Continental GT coupe. The “junior” saloon from Crewe also has a new platform that was made in partnership with Porsche. It has four-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars. It also sets the stage for really good driving dynamics by making the luxurious interior less affected by the road. The grip, balance, and steering have all gotten much better.

Of course, it has the same 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine, which makes 626bhp and has an unlimited amount of torque. It gets the car to 62mph in less than four seconds and up to over 200mph. The Spur is also available with Bentley’s lighter, more easily revving V8 engine and a six-cylinder Flying Sur hybrid powertrain.

Never before did the Spur feel so complete and like it could do its job as a luxury supersonic driver’s car. And a lot of it is still because of the cabin. Even though the Flying Spur is Bentley’s least expensive limousine, the inside is truly luxurious, with soft, beautifully stitched leathers, real, natural veneers, and eye-catching and touchable metal brightwork.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the flagship model for Daimler’s super luxury Maybach brand in the 21st century. It is the most expensive and unique car in a line of limousines that may be the most well-known and admired in the world.

From the outside, it looked at least as much like an S-Class as a Maybach. This is because Daimler made a strategic decision a few years ago to make “halo” Maybach models for some of its more standard Mercedes passenger car lines. At the same time, Simon Cowell’s custom Maybach 57 and 62 limousines, which are very rare, were also put into the history books.

Because of this, the fact that this car is “just” an S-Class could be both its best and worst feature. An S-Class may not have the same drool-worthy curb appeal as a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, but being an S-Class means this car has all those advanced active suspension and driver assistance technologies, which help make it so refined, rich, and cozy.

The 603bhp twin-turbocharged petrol V12 in the top-of-the-line S650 model is barely audible, and its commitment to comfort and good manners is outstanding. The 496bhp 4.0-liter V8 S580 will also be sold in the US. With a wheelbase that is 18 cm longer than even the long-wheelbase version of the standard S-Class, even passengers with long legs will have plenty of space.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

In 2018, Rolls-Royce added the Marmite to its best super luxury cars lineup. This was in response to a lot of customer feedback that a more everyday-useful, all-terrain, family-friendly model would be a welcome addition to the company’s showroom range.

The Cullinan’s design has been criticized enough from all sides to make it seem like its creator took a big risk by making a car that some have called awkward and ugly and others have criticized in even harsher terms. But if Rolls-market Royce’s research is right, and a year’s worth of confirmed orders suggests it is, the dislike of those who wouldn’t have bought a Cullinan anyway won’t have much of an effect on its commercial success.

There are as many things to like about living on this car as there are to dislike about the idea behind it or how it looks. This is a real Rolls-Royce. It has great mechanical refinement, the most comfortable ride on the market, and is easy to drive.

The Cullinan’s height-adjustable air suspension and BMW-inspired four-wheel drive give it all the off-road capability that many owners will need. Towing capacity is currently capped at 2.6 tonnes, but it will soon go up to a more generous 3.5 tonnes. Which is likely enough for a speedboat that costs a lot more than the car.

Bentley Bentayga

During the Autocar road test evaluation process, the Bentayga had a lot of exciting things happen. We gave it a high rating with a few caveats when it had a W12 engine in 2016, and we gave it an even higher rating when Bentley released a 4.0-liter, 429bhp turbocharged diesel V8 from Audi in 2017. This engine made the same amount of torque as the twelve-cylinder gasoline engine, but it did so at crankspeeds that were easier to handle.

Then, in 2018, as diesel engines became more harmful, Bentley pulled the Bentayga Diesel from showrooms in Europe, hiding what we thought was the best version of the car. In the same year, a V8 gasoline model was added, and in 2019, a plug-in hybrid joined the lineup. Before all of the models were updated for 2020, there was also the Speed, which had 626 horsepower and cost £182,000.

Even in this class, the Bentayga stands out because of its wonderfully plush interior, swell of torque-filled performance, and feeling of imperious, all-encompassing luxury. These qualities might even be enough to change the mind of someone who used to be against the idea of living in a blue-blooded SUV.

It isn’t quite as quiet or as comfortable as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, but it is a little bit more fun to drive at the cost of that last bit of comfort. But the Bentayga only gives up a shade an occasional hint of head toss and the tiniest bit of fussiness over certain lumps and bumps at speed. Even if you often drive a luxury car, it’s likely you wouldn’t know what you were missing.

BMW iX

The BMW iX is the most like an all-electric superluxury car we’ve seen. It has the performance, refinement, and versatility to really rule the road. The outside design of this full-size SUV is controversial, and some people may not like it at all. The iX, on the other hand, should stand out for a number of reasons to people who think about the EV they want to own, care about how sustainable its different parts and production processes are, and look a little deeper to find what makes a high-end car desirable.

This car’s drive battery is made of metals from North Africa and Australia that were gathered in a responsible way. The leather in this car is made from olives, which is good for the environment. It comes in a few different versions, with the iX xDrive50 being the most powerful. It has more than 500 horsepower, four-wheel drive, and a range of more than 300 miles. Then there’s the “M60” version, which can run on 600 electric horses.

Range Rover SVAutobiography

Top-tier, long wheelbase Range Rover has come a long way as a luxury car since the early days of the well-known SUV on which it is based. Land Rover’s Special Operations base near Coventry is where the modern SVAutobiography is hand-finished. It is now 5.2 meters long and can weigh up to 2.6 tons at its heaviest. It was made to take full advantage of the growing market for expensive SUVs and the respect some people have for the Range Rover brand, which it does quite well.

The SVAutobiography can be powered by either a gasoline V8, a diesel V8, or a four-cylinder gasoline plug-in hybrid. It only has four seats, but each of the rear “lounge” chairs has a fold-out aluminum tray table, and a sliding panoramic sunroof makes the interior feel very light and open. The materials inside are also nicer to touch and cost more than those in the standard Range Rover.

Ride comfort and isolation are also better than that car, but neither is as good as the most refined cars in this niche. Some of the sharper edges seem to test the structural limits of the car’s underbody, which makes the ride a little less smooth.

If you want to be unique, don’t be fooled by the BMW logo on the Alpina B7’s long hood. Only the Mercedes-Maybach, one of the most unique and rare cars on this list, is as unlikely to run into you on the road, and the B7’s price tag of close to $200,000 after options reflects that.

As always with Alpina, there are two sides to its take on a BMW model that is made in large numbers. On paper, with 600bhp and 590lb ft of torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, the B7 seems to be a direct replacement for the M7 that BMW won’t make. And in terms of performance, this might be true. The B7’s powertrain and suspension have been changed in a lot of ways to make it not only faster than any other 7-Series but also better at handling.

But the B7’s true calling card is its sublime rolling refinement. It also has almost sports car like body control and a level of agility that is totally out of sync with the luxury-saloon crowd. It is a very well-rounded machine, and only the Bentley Continental Flying Spur is better in this way.

Mercedes’ top-of-the-line electric limousine, the EQS, is already on sale in the US, starting at a cool $155k. However, we won’t know where it fits in this list until we’ve driven it on US roads, which we hope to do by summer 2022. It has 751 horsepower and looks like a four-wheeled space capsule, so it could go pretty high. Keep an eye on this.
