2022 BMW Alpina B4, The BMW Alpina D4 S, a diesel-powered brother of the new B4 S, is now available. The two provide Alpina its first rear doors and bridge the gap between the BMW 4 Series and BMW M4 Competition.
They are formally known as the BMW Alpina B4 S and BMW Alpina D4 S and are introduced soon after BMW bought the Alpina brand.
They are anticipated to be the brand’s final modifications to its lineup of current-generation BMW vehicles.
The new B4 utilizes a tweaked version of the ‘S58’ twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six petrol engine, providing 488bhp and 538lb ft via an eight-speed automatic transmission to both axles – only slightly less power and 59lb ft more torque than the 503bhp M4 Competition.
The D4 has the same transmission but a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid straight-six diesel engine that produces 350 horsepower while matching the 538 lb-ft of torque of the petrol vehicle.
The B4 is actually 0.1 seconds faster from 0-62 mph than the more extreme vehicle, requiring only 3.7 seconds for the sprint, and it barely edges it for top speed, peaking out at 187 mph, despite the power loss and weighing 240 kg more than the two-door M4 Competition. The D4 adds 55 kilograms more and requires 4.8 seconds to accelerate from zero to 62 mph.
While the D4 achieves 40.9mpg and emits 182g/km of CO2, the B4 only reaches 28mpg on the WLTP cycle.
The gearbox has been strengthened to handle the much increased torque output, and it has been designed to transfer the majority of the engine’s power backwards “as befits the sporty nature” of the vehicle.
In contrast to the M4, the Alpina pair is designed to offer “high-level driving performance as well as tons of comfort for relaxing touring.” Because of this billing, the chassis has undergone substantial modification.
Hardware improvements that give the B4 and D4 their distinctive personalities include new bulkhead reinforcement struts, firmer bushings and mounts, custom front anti-roll bars, and a special spring-and-damper design. While there are three distinct steering response modes available, variable dampers are supposed to provide “noticeable difference between the various driving modes.”
The brakes have also been improved, with floating callipers and 345mm discs at the back and four-piston callipers at the front holding 395mm discs. Composite discs that have been drilled and are lightweight are a possibility.
The stylistic changes over the basic 4 Series are substantially more subdued than those of the M4, as is common for an Alpina vehicle. The distinguishing features are distinctive bumpers, spoilers, exhaust exits, side skirts, and badging, plus a fresh take on the brand’s iconic 20-spoke alloy wheel design.
These 20-inch wheels weigh only 12 kg each, according to Alpina, thanks to a revolutionary production method.
