2022 BMW Alpina B8, BMW’s famed M division represents the German automaker’s high-performance vehicles. The company’s affiliation with Alpina is unclear, as is what separates vehicles like the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe from other 8 Series Gran Coupe variants.

Because the German Ministry of Transport recognizes Alpina as a genuine automobile manufacturer, the vehicles Alpina builds based on BMW models have a sense of independence. Alpina also has a mysterious element to it; you have to know what you’re getting with automobiles like the 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe.

After testing the B8, we can say that it more closely resembles the dynamic performance and luxurious, grand touring sensibility that we’ve come to expect from modern Alpinated BMWs.

BMW Twin-Turbo Power is Twistier

The engine compartment is one area where Alpina changes BMW components. In fact, the B8’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 produces 37 lb-ft more torque than the M8’s 590 lb-ft of all-out torque while producing somewhat less power (612 horsepower for Alpina against 617 for the M8). BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF complements the B8’s engine. With BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering as standard features, Alpina modifies the transmission, including the inclusion of its signature shift paddles.

The 4,706-pound four-door BMW Alpina B8 sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, which is slightly faster than the time we recorded for the lighter two-door M8 Competition coupe we tested in 2020. A quarter mile consists of

The B8 had a little slower trap speed of 123 mph flat than the M8, yet both cars reached the same timing of 11.4 seconds. When it came time to slow down the massive B8 battleship, our test crew was nearly taken aback by how quickly it came to a halt. When the vehicle stopped from 60 mph in 99 feet, the logbook contained adjectives like “tremendous” and “incredible for this pretty large and substantial automobile.” The supercar area is on the outskirts of anything less than 100 feet.

Stylish Looks with Bold Chops

Given how stately it appears on the outside with its slightly more aerodynamic bodywork, revised front and rear fascia, and Alpina-signature 20-spoke, 20-inch wheels, it would be easy to dismiss the long and swoopy four-door coupe-like 2022 BMW Alpina B8 as nothing more than a straight-line, autobahn-running luxo barge. However, your assumption was erroneous.

“Wow, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said road test editor Chris Walton, “but this thing is an unbelievable thrill ride.” “All-wheel drive works wonderfully. Because of the car’s clear rear bias, you can step the rear end out a few inches, rotate it completely around the skidpad while driving with the throttle, and then stab the throttle as you come to a halt. When it wags its tail a little, you shoot across the centre. The steering is really accurate and well-balanced.”

The evidence backs up Walton’s excitement. A car that pulls more than 1.00 lateral g (average) on the skidpad is impressive, and the Alpina B8 went even higher with 1.01 g. Our MotorTrend figure eight’s average lap time of 23.7 seconds at 0.89 g is far from slow. However, given that Alpina starts with the best components from the 8 Series bin, it’s not surprising. Alpina offers a Comfort+ option on the adaptive damper arrangement to further separate the B8 Gran Coupe from its other 8 Series siblings as a luxurious, high-speed cruiser.

The 8 Series design is elevated even further inside, with nearly every top-shelf option from the 8 Series menu. The Alpina crest appears on the large, exceptionally thick “Lavalina” leather steering wheel, while the interior of the base Alpina is covered in Walnut Anthracite high gloss. Exclusive features include illuminated door sills and an upmarket iDrive controller made of crystal glass, both engraved with the Alpina symbol.

The 2022 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe is an exquisite grand touring car with high-end technology capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 mph, 160 mph, or even a short lap around a circuit. Furthermore, while the B8 is very much an 8 Series, Alpina adds just enough to give it a distinct personality.
