2022 Honda Pilot, We appreciate how quiet the nine-speed automated gearbox is, and the Pilot’s V-6 has plenty of power and a sporty sound. The Honda is not the heaviest three-row crossover to drive, but due to its size, it might seem heavy while turning. The 20-inch wheels that come with the higher trims detract slightly from the ride quality while improving the Pilot’s otherwise awkward look. And even when the car is full of passengers and cargo, it rides rather well. The Pilot occasionally seems separated from the road due to its lack of body control. Additionally, the car’s mild steering makes parking-lot maneuvering simple while also adding to the disconnected feeling on the highway.
The Pilot is exceptionally fuel-efficient for such a large and useful vehicle, according to both the EPA and our in-the-field testing, and fuel efficiency is strong within Honda’s showroom. 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway are the fuel economy ratings for the front-wheel-drive model. All-wheel drive reduces both official ratings by 1 mpg, giving a combined 19 city and 26 highway mpg. On our 75 mph fuel-economy route, the all-wheel-drive-only Elite model we tested returned 27 mpg, outpacing its highway rating.
One of the Pilot’s flaws is the annoying center touchscreen, but Honda did add a much-needed volume knob back in 2019. While models EX and above have an 8.0-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, voice command, and other app capabilities, the base LX’s 5.0-inch display provide the essentials. While standard on the Touring and Elite, navigation is an option on the EX.
