4.5/5Overall Score

With the 2023 Corolla Cross, Toyota has created the Corolla of SUVs, which is both a blessing and a disaster. The Cross combines the nameplate's trademark affordability with a make a better of functionality. Unfortunately, it inherited the tiny car's forgettable driving personality and weak performance. The style, while unremarkable, skews toward the adorable end of the spectrum, and the sportier trims add a little visual flair to the Corolla Cross's curb appeal. The standard engine is a 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but an optional hybrid system adds three electric motors to increase combined output to 194 horsepower.

Performance

All non-hybrid Corolla Cross vehicles will be equipped with a 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic gearbox; front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. We remarked during the initial test that the acceleration was slow and the engine sounded buzzy, especially at high rpm. Our all-wheel-drive test car achieved a 60-mph time of 9.2 seconds on our test track. Sloths move faster. The hybrid powertrain comprises a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors; all-wheel drive is standard, and the powertrain produces a total of 194 horsepower. We haven’t driven the hybrid model yet, but we’re looking for better refinement and faster acceleration.

Fuel Economy

The EPA rates the front-wheel drive Corolla Cross at 31 mpg city and 33 mpg highway; opting for all-wheel drive reduces those statistics to 29 and 32, respectively. The Corolla Cross slightly underperformed its highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel economy test. The EPA numbers for the hybrid model are not yet available, but Toyota predicts a combined rating of 37 mpg.

Cargo, Interior, and Comfort

Drivers who are familiar with the Corolla sedan will feel right at home inside the Corolla Cross. The dashboard, interior materials, and convenience features are essentially identical to those found in the four-door model. However, the bigger dimensions of the Corolla Cross provide extra space for passengers, particularly in the back seat, as well as additional baggage capacity. Lower trims are significantly more basic, although the XLE model has attractive faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a flip-down center armrest for rear-seat passengers.

Infotainment

A square infotainment display running Toyota’s newest software interface emerges from the dashboard of the Corolla Cross. Wireless smartphone charging, rear-seat USB charging outlets, and a JBL sound system are optional, while Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio are standard.
