The 2022 BMW M4 is just as thrilling as its M3 sedan counterpart, but it's only available as a coupe or soft-top convertible. The standard hard-top model has rear-wheel drive, a smooth manual transmission, and a thrilling 473-hp twin-turbo straight-six engine. The Competition model boasts a 503-horsepower engine, a rapid automatic transmission, and specific chassis adjustments that should result in faster lap times at the local racetrack. All-wheel drive is only offered on the automatic M4, and this slick system includes a drift-worthy rear-drive mode. The M4 is a blast to drive regardless of body form or power delivery, and its ride is surprisingly polite when apex chasing isn't part of the everyday commute. We'd prefer analog gauges over the incomprehensible digital ones, and fewer selectable driving-mode selections, but the 2022 M4 is a good vehicle.

The 2022 BMW M4 is a high-performance sport coupe that serves as one of the fastest and most powerful automobiles in BMW’s inventory. Both the M4 and the 4 Series coupe it’s based on were fully overhauled for 2021, with new tech and styling supported by the most powerful M4 engine ever. For 2022 the M4 Competition is now available with all-wheel drive.

The new BMW M4 boasts one fantastic engine. There’s plentiful quantities of power from just off idle till redline, and turbo lag is quite low. Competition models like our test vehicle get a minor rise in power along with some other small enhancements. In our testing, the M4 Competition blasted from 0 to 60 mph in in 3.7 seconds and covered the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 122.7 mph. That’s on par with the current Chevrolet Corvette and Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe.

Our test car featured the automatic transmission. It shifts crisply and reacts swiftly when you need a downshift while aggressive driving, but it also works wonderfully for commuting about town too. The optional carbon-ceramic brakes (also on our test car) are fade-free even under intense driving. Our test car stopped from 60 mph in 106 feet, which is a touch shorter than normal for its class.

The standard adaptive suspension does a fantastic job of keeping the car planted while you’re hammering through bends, but we found the firmest option to be a bit too stiff on the street. Our primary complaint is the steering. While it’s an upgrade over the prior M4, it lacks the degree of feedback and precision you’ll find elsewhere.

The BMW M4 gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (16 city/23 highway). That’s near to the bottom of an already somewhat thirsty class. That so, we experienced substantially better fuel efficiency during our testing, including an outstanding 26.6 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route. That’s better than we’ve seen in nearly all of the competitors.
