4.4/5Overall Score

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-class SUV, which has a higher style quotient than the boxy GLB-class, foregoes some utility in favor of a swooper roofline and more curb appeal in 2022.
The handling is agile enough to give some thrills on a bumpy road, and the turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers lively performance. Even with the GLA's available all-wheel drive, don't anticipate much off-road performance. Inside, you'll find all of Mercedes-infotainment, Benz's luxury, and convenience amenities found in its larger SUVs. Looking for something a little racier?

Check out the Mercedes-AMG variant (reviewed separately), which has a maximum power output of 375 horsepower.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class 2022, The GLB-class, like the somewhat smaller GLA-class, will undergo little alterations in 2022: SiriusXM satellite radio and a 115-volt power outlet are now included in the Premium package.

The 2022 GLA-class is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 221 horsepower and is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. An all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic clocked a 6.3-second time from zero to 60 mph on our test course. Despite its speed, that score is slower than the previous generation device, which achieved a 5.7-second time in the identical test. While the suspension of the 2022 GLA250 hasn’t lost all of its nimbleness in the makeover, it is noticeably more compliant on rougher roads—a nice upgrade over the previous model.

The GLA250 is expected to get 25 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the interstate, and 28 mpg overall, according to the EPA. In all three criteria, the all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic’s fuel efficiency estimations are 1 mpg lower. Mercedes claims that a plug-in hybrid version will be introduced to the range in the future. We haven’t had an opportunity to put the new GLA250 through its paces on our 200-mile highway fuel efficiency test route, but we will when we do.

Automatic emergency braking is standard across the lineup, but more sophisticated driver-assistance functions like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist will require the Driver Assistance package, which is available as an option. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for further information on the GLA-crash-test class’s results. The following are important safety features:

  • Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian recognition is standard.
  • Lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist is available.
  • Adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode is available.
