2023 Chevy Colorado, The Chevrolet Colorado grows in size in 2023 with a completely new, bigger outward appearance and a much improved interior. The mid-size truck’s outdated V-6 and Duramax diesel engines have been replaced with the turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four of the Silverado 1500, which produces 231 to 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Chevy has developed a Trail Boss trim level for the 2023 Colorado even though those engines are no longer available. In the first half of 2023, the third-generation Colorado will begin production at the GM assembly facility in Wentzville, Missouri, which also produces the current Colorado and GMC Canyon.
The formula for the ultimate mid-size truck should take into account the Jeep Gladiator’s sense of fun, the Honda Ridgeline’s ride and bed-storage capacity, the Toyota Tacoma’s eye-catching appearance, and the Ford Ranger’s reasonable starting price. Even a little amount of garlic salt could be beneficial.
The all-new Chevy Colorado for 2023 wants to be similar. Starting with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the same horsepower as Nissan’s new Frontier’s V-6, this all-new third generation truck, which goes on sale in the first half of next year, fights for the best components.
Chevy has streamlined the majority of the Colorado’s configurable features for 2023 in light of the success of the truck’s predecessors. In this new model, only the four-door crew cab with a five-foot-two-inch box is available. By removing the short-cab and long-bed options across the board, from the entry-level Work Truck (WT) trim up to the dust-spewing ZR2 off-roader, Chevy has opted to deliver what the majority of people want, even if it means giving some people more than they need.
In proportion, the new Colorado is 2.3 inches broader than the current pickup truck. The new Colorado has a front overhang that is smaller and a longer wheelbase overall, both of which help to enhance approach angles. The current Tacoma TRD Pro’s 35.0-degree approach is outperformed by the new ZR2’s 38.3-degree approach, which also outperforms the previous truck’s 31.8-degree approach. The Gladiator, with a severe 43.6 degree approach angle, wins first place in its category in this area.
Colorado wheels now employ the 6.0-by-5.5-inch bolt pattern from the full-size Silverado 1500, enabling mounting of aluminum wheels as early as 1999. Larger hubs are intended to complement larger brakes. The 2023 Colorado now has four-wheel disc brakes that are almost an inch larger up front and more than an inch larger on the solid rear axle. It has gained 200 to 300 pounds in 4WD configuration, with the ZR2 models seeing the most gain. The current ZR2 is powered by the soon-to-be-gone 3.6-liter V-6 and has increased in size to 5298 pounds, which is the greatest increase we detected based on the published numbers. The last crew-cab ZR2 we evaluated had that engine and weighed 4749 pounds.
The old Colorado and GMC Canyon were the last two mid-size vehicles with diesel engines, however they are no longer manufactured. In 2023, the Colorado will only be powered by a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine and an improved eight-speed automated transmission. Power varies across trim levels.
The WT and LT variants come with standard power and torque ratings of 237 horsepower and 259 pound-feet. The greatest weight that this engine can tow is 3500 pounds. The Trail Boss and Z71 grades feature a 7700-pound towing capability for 2023, along with 310 horsepower, 390 pound-feet of torque, and these specs. That is the highest in the industry. The WT and LT trim levels also have this engine available. Last but not least, the ZR2 delivers 430 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm and shares the same horsepower as the Z71 and Trail Boss. This diesel engine is stronger than the previous one by 121 horsepower and 61 pound-feet of torque. Chevy asserts that any trim may be upgraded to the high-output engine with their Limited Production Option (LPO) presale offer.
Chevy assured us that the fuel economy ratings for the 2.7-liter truck, which the EPA has not yet made public, will be approximately equivalent to the 19 city and 25 highway statistics of the 2.5-liter pickup’s previous generation. The turbocharged 2.7-liter engines’ stop/start technology and dynamic cylinder management enable them to decrease combustion to only two cylinders when required to save fuel.
Trail Boss is now offered as a standalone trim level rather than being bundled with the LT and Z71 models. Its broad front and 32-inch Goodyear Territory AT tires are mounted on 18-inch wheels, same like the ZR2 model, but with a factory lift that is 2.0 inches lower and offers 9.4 inches more ground clearance. The Z71 features a more premium interior, but the Trail Boss has the same wheels and tires. When you upgrade to the ZR2 model, the scenario becomes considerably worse.
The Colorado ZR2 comes standard with the biggest tires, the brightest LED illumination, and 10.7 inches of ground clearance. As standard features, the vehicle comes with a spray-on bedliner, 17-inch wheels, 33-inch mud-terrain tires, front and rear electronic locking differentials, a 3.42 rear axle, and enhanced body protection.
Also included are the gorgeous Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers in gold and blue. Chevy claims that owing to the size and construction of the new car, the rear dampers must now be mounted outside to the frame rather than inside.
Since the Desert Ruler is specifically designed to govern deserts rather than trails, it offers the ZR2 even more off-road flamboyance. It boasts 17-inch beadlock wheels, a striking bash-bar front bumper, a light bar that is mounted to the top, an underbody camera, and stickers that proclaim it to be the genuine Desert Boss. It is unclear what occurs when two bosses come into contact in the wild. They may have paid for the lunch.
A unique rear storage system that is standard on the ZR2 is not available on other versions. It contains a 45-inch-wide by 4-inch-deep lockable box that may be used to store tools, drinks, or your own rocks. This tailgate can lock itself in the midway position, as the Ford Maverick compact truck does, to aid in flat-loading materials (up to 500 pounds), such sheets of wood or plasterboard, into the bed.
The interior redesign is another noteworthy improvement over the previous vehicle. Every Colorado has a large 11.3-inch infotainment screen that wirelessly supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This is the biggest screen offered in the small truck class up until the arrival of the 2023 Ranger later this year, which offers a 12.1-inch screen as an option.
Instead of being tucked away opposite the gear selector, the cupholders are now straight down in front of the central console, and the gear shifter now favors the passenger side of the car. The new instrument panel and steering wheel go well with the contemporary style. Additionally available is dual-zone temperature control for the rear. If you desire seatbelts for Z71 or ZR2 vehicles with even more interior flair, Chevy can provide red or yellow ones. A sunroof is yet another optional addition.
The new Colorado also has an Off-Road Performance Display. The app offers data on the tire pressure, pitch, roll, g-force, GPS, and altitude of the car depending on the driving mode. Although the Colorado lacks a Sport mode, its other driving settings, like as Tow/Haul, Off-Road, Terrain, and Baja, are intended for situations that call for precise throttle control and gear switching. The Colorado Hitch Guidance software, which is increasingly ubiquitous, is one of the up to 10 camera views. It helps in putting the hitch in the right spot the first time. An additional Hitch View goes that camera one step farther with a zoomed-in view.
Prior to the price being revealed later this year, we want to try one. It will still be constructed in Wentzville, Missouri, by GM personnel, and production will begin in the first half of 2023.
