Toyota bZ4X EV and Other Models Could Expand GR Performance Portfolio in 2023

Toyota bZ4X EV , According to the bZ4X’s head engineer, a performance variation by Gazoo Racing is in the works, and a GR Camry is also being considered. Gazoo Racing’s head engineer told Move Electric that the Toyota bZ4X might get the performance treatment. At the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota revealed the bZ4X GR Sport concept, and more GR models are anticipated to follow. According to Motor Trend, the Toyota Camry might get a GR version as well.

Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s motorsport subsidiary, is now in charge of various intriguing vehicles, including the GR86 and GR Supra sports cars. Gazoo demonstrated its ability to convert ordinary cars into spectacular inventions with the widely anticipated GR Corolla, a 300-hp, manual-only, all-wheel-drive version of the normal Corolla hatchback. The newly announced Toyota bZ4X—an electric crossover—might get the GR treatment, according to rumors.

The bZ4X’s principal engineer, Daisuke Ido, recently informed Move Electric that a performance version is being considered and would be tweaked by the Gazoo Racing team. Toyota teased the bZ4X GR Sport concept at the Tokyo car show in January, according to Ido. The blacked-out exterior and wider rims were the only indications that it wasn’t a standard-issue bZ4X, which in its most formidable incarnation includes a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive layout with 214 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. There were no more technical specifications about the bZ4X GR Sport.

However, the Lexus RZ has been introduced after that idea was displayed. Because it is built on the same e-TNGA chassis as the bZ4X, its more powerful 308-hp dual-motor powerplant might easily find its way into a future GR bZ4X. Nonetheless, Ido stated that developing a GR bZ4X would need more than simply stronger electric motors. Instead, he stated that it must handle and execute to the standards that Gazoo Racing consumers anticipate. If it lives up to those expectations, it will be the first electric car and the first crossover to bear the GR moniker.

The emergence of new GR vehicles in Toyota’s lineup does not appear to be restricted to sports cars and hot hatchbacks. Along with a possible performance version of the bZ4X, the Camry might be in line for a facelift. When questioned about Gazoo Racing launching a sedan earlier this month, Bob Carter, Toyota’s senior vice president of sales, didn’t rule out a possible GR Camry.
